First graders used their Portrait of a Graduate communicator skills to enhance their math unit on Data Analysis. They began their Portrait of a Graduate journey by playing the "Telephone" game. After several unsuccessful rounds of the game, they had a discussion to identify some strategies they could use to improve their chances of having the last student repeat the correct phrase. They decided that speaking clearly and listening are both important communication skills. With teacher guidance, they created an anchor chart describing how good communicators look and sound. This anchor chart was added to and used as a reference as they used communication skills to develop a survey question, collect and analyze data, and create a graph. First graders continue to develop and apply these skills across all curriculum areas.
